This is what can happen if you don't  properly groom your dog.

To properly groom your dog you should brush and comb your dog at least 4 times a week. In today's economy,  if you can not afford to have your dog groomed by a professional you should follow these basic steps. Brush and comb your dog before bathing. This will eliminate  what professional groomers call water mats. Water mats can cause these types of  skin conditions. Hot spots, Rashes, Loss of Hair, chewing, scratching and odor. In extreme cases, matting can cause poor circulation which can cause loss of limb.

Being a professional groomer for almost 20 years has given me a great understanding and appreciation for overall pet care and well being.  One of the best things you can do for your pet is check for sores, cuts or breaks in skin regularly.  Especially if an animal is excessively licking or pawing at a particular area, that is likely a sign of irritation.  At first sign of red, brown discoloration or swelling, a protective collar (from the vet) should be worn to prevent further damage until the ness is healed.  If left unthreaded such as in these photos, (below) your best friend may ultimately require a pricey visit to the vet.  Since most dogs don't clean themselves like cats do you will need to check them more often  Here at Fancytails, we have the benefit of checking the whole animal while grooming and do our best to notify customers of any noted problems that may otherwise be missed at home.  This notification is not a reflection of poor pet care (although lots of owners may initially feel that way) it's an opportunity to care and protect your pet from becoming more uncomfortable or out of hand.  If the problem is persistent or recurs often, there may be an underling source such as a simple food allergy.  I find having my dog on a diet based on natural and limited ingredients works well for her. (natural balance limited ingredients) I love different pet care issues that can be cared for simply at home.  We realize how important your pets overall health care is and are here to help should you have any questions or concerns... Please keep in mind I am not a veterinary but I have seen a lot of things to were I can give some advise.
